Offshore Wind Turbines

The facilities within SoFSI have been designed to enable experimental research into all infrastructure which operates within the marine environment, and includes wind turbines, offshore oil structures, and bridges. The key research areas for this category include developing understanding of marine scour and the relationships between the structures and the soil (seabed) within an aquatic environments. The 8m crane height above the soil pit allows the construction, insitu, of near scale wind turbine foundations and the hydraulic power unit within the laboratory can be used to drive an excitator to mimic the movement of turbine blades.
